The study was conducted in hemodialysis units at Ain Shams Specializes Hospital and Ain Shams University Hospital. One hundred adult patients on hemodialysis had period not less than one year, Data were collected by self administered quality of life scale and patient' assessment sheet to assess a quality of self-care for hemodialysis patients. The most interesting finding of this study was, home condition had a significant effect on spiritual wellbeing and on total quality of life. While socioeconomic status and patient educational levels had a significant effect on physical, psychological, social and total quality of life. Also the total self care score had a significant effect on physical and spiritual well being and the total quality of life. While patient age and sex, had an insignificant effect on the patient quality of life in all items. Further research must focus on developing a quality of life standard assessment approach for chronic renal failure patients under going hemodialysis

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus has been recognized as a disease for centuries. Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus [NIDDM] is becoming one of the main health problems in developing countries. Diabetes is a prime example of a chronic disease that requires patients to play an active role in daily self-management. This study aims to [1] describe the specific self-regulatory measures that individuals with non Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus perform to promote diabetic control, [2] identify the factors affecting the self care measures among Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus patients. One hundred patients with NIDDM were randomly selected from diabetic clinics of both Ain Shams University Hospital and El-Sahel Educational Hospital. Tools of data collection, were [1] a patient self care rating scales sheet concerned with socio-demographic data, self care activities, a self dietary care, exercises, patient compliance with medication and foot care, etc. [2] a withdrawal venous blood sample for measuring the level of hemoglobin and HbAlc. Approximately one third of the patients [30%] able to describe 5 foods to be avoided, [33%] aware of symptoms of hypoglycemic attack and [50%] able to inspect foot daily, correctly. The majority of the patients have a knowledge deficit regarding self-care activities. There is a positive significant correlation between levels of HbAlc, and BMI, also between HbAlc, and socioeconomic level. Develop a patient educational program using different teaching strategies aims to promote and maintaining an independent self care level for a diabetic patient with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus

ABSTRACT

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery has become established as a powerful therapy for prolonging survival and improving the quality of life of certain subsets of patients with coronary artery disease. Patient education is a vital component of cardiac rehabilitation. It aims to improve quality of life, ensure continuity of care and promote adherence to health care treatment plans. Aim of the study was of there folds, designing, implementing a teaching program and evaluating its effects on the quality of life of patients with coronary artery bypass graft surgery. A quasi-experimental research design. The research was conducted at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Ain Shams University Specialized Hospital. Sixty patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Patients were divided into two equal groups [the study and control group]. The study group was exposed to the designed patient teaching program and quality of life index scale was measured for both group, pre, immediate postoperative and three months after operation. The study group patients demonstrated total improvement in their quality of life index score [183.5 +/- 68.5] preoperatively to [243.5 +/- 68.3] three months after operative. A highly significant difference was documented between study group quality of life index score [243.5 +/- 68.3] versus [201.4 +/- 54.1] for the control group subjects three months after operative. The patients who participated in the teaching program demonstrated an improvement in their cognition, and practices of self-care and quality of life index score compared with the control group. A further research is recommended to study the effect of patient education program on the cost effectiveness, decreasing hospital readmissions and hospital stays, improving the personal quality of life and minimizes complications of illness and therapies
